Together with my fellow students in Man and Identity Department,

we were commissioned by Alexander van Slobbe

to create something based on the traditional basketry craft for the exhibition Gone with the Wind.

When we went to see the craftsmen manipulating natural materials into various functional or decorative forms,

It appeared to me as human beings torturing the nature for their own interests.

Often, the natural traces of the materials are all lost during the making process,

leaving the end product with a strangely artificial appearance.

I was very much intrigued by this quality,

so I started to experiment with different 'torturing' techniques and materials

to create a beautiful basket between nature and artificial.
